Circle of Friends in the Pacific
In this film made for the Ministry of External Affairs, we show how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014, the first in 33 years, after the last visit of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981, was a landmark.
A huge section of Fijian population is the people of Indian-origin. A large number of Indians had arrived in Fiji, as indentured labourers in the 19th Century. Significantly, Prime Minister Modi’s visit took place after democracy was reestablished in Fiji.
It was in Fiji that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Forum for India, Pacific Island Countries (FIPIC). It enhanced India's cooperation with the island countries of the Pacific.
